Armagh - Ireland's oldest city - is a place of huge historic interest, dating back to 4500 BC. It's here that St Patrick built his first stone church in 445 AD - on the hill where St Patrick's Church of Ireland Cathedral stands today. This is also the burial site of Brian Boru, High King Of Ireland, who died in 1014. Uniquely, Armagh's second cathedral is also named after St Patrick: the Roman Catholic building, with its towering twin spires, was constructed in 1840. Unsurprisingly, Armagh is the Christian capital of Ireland. The city hosts many exhibitions about its colourful past, notably at the Navan Centre and Fort, the Palace Stables Heritage Centre at the Archbishop's Palace (where costumed actors answer questions about life in the 1700s), St Patrick's Trian Visitor Complex and Armagh County Museum. Simply to walk the city streets is to happen upon any number of fine old buildings. But those preferring a more modern experience will find lots of great restaurants, friendly pubs and musical events, an observatory and planetarium, performing arts at the Market Place Theatre, a wealth of lovely surrounding scenery in what's known as the Orchard County, and sports including golf, angling and horse-riding.
