| 10 Places to Stay

The small, vibrant town of Ballyconnell lies in the west of Cavan's lovely lakeland, nestling in gentle drumlin country below the steep slopes of Slieve Rushen. This is an angler's paradise with a great reputation for coarse fishing, while golfers flock to the Slieve Russell Hotel's Golf & Country Club to play on an 18-hole championship course beautifully set among lakes and drumlins. The luxury hotel also provides excellent dining, a spa, a leisure centre and conference facilities. Located by the Shannon-Erne Waterway, Ballyconnell is an ideal base for boating trips, whether by cruiser or canoe. The holder of several "tidy town" awards, it bustles with popular pubs, restaurants and nightclubs. Extreme sports fans, meanwhile, may try everything from hovercrafting and dragster driving to woodland laser combat and mud-buggy racing at Outdoors & Dirty (ODD), a new adventure park at Brackley Lake. Just outside Ballyconnell, the mountainside wind turbines have become an unlikely tourist attraction, not least for their stunning views over the countryside. And visitors should not miss the Marble Arch Caves, just a short drive away at the County Fermanagh border. Here, a boat trip along a subterranean river glides through enormous caverns, past magical displays of stalactites and stalagmites.
