| 10 Places to Stay

The small market town of Miltown Malbay has lots of good things going for it. One of the attractions is its proximity to the delightful beaches, walks and views of west Clare's Atlantic shoreline. Although not located on the coast itself, Miltown Malbay is close to beautiful seafront villages such as Spanish Point, Freagh and Quilty. Here, visitors may choose to relax and enjoy the scenery and fresh air, or perhaps indulge in a spot of fishing, swimming or surfing. Other activities enjoyed throughout the area's twisting, turning roads and lush green countryside include walking, cycling, horse- riding and golf, with a choice of courses only minutes away from Miltown Malbay by car. The neighbourhood is rich in legend and folklore, and surrounded by ancient ruins and monuments, but its big claim to fame is as a centre for wonderful, authentic Irish music, played at music sessions in the lively local pubs. Miltown Malbay has been famously been home to many gifted musicians, notably the great piper Willie Clancy. He is commemorated in the town by the annual Willie Clancy summer school, the largest in Ireland, held every year in July and attended by more than 1,000 students flocking to learn traditional music and dance.
