Glengarriff is a stunningly beautiful coastal village set against a backdrop of towering mountains, glens and rivers. Located at the head of a sheltered inlet of Bantry Bay in south west Cork, Glengarriff's harbour is home to basking seals, swans and wonderful sunsets over the sea. Unsurprisingly, sailing, kayaking and pleasure cruising are very popular here. This is a quaint, peaceful village filled with gaily painted buildings housing a variety of shops, hotels, jovial pubs, tempting restaurants and art galleries. The surrounding countryside, with its great geographical diversity, offers many scenic walks which are considered to be among the most breathtaking in Ireland. Ideal as a touring centre, Glengarriff acts as the gateway to the unforgettable sights of the Beara Peninsula, or exciting County Kerry seaside towns such as Kenmare. Closer to home, Glengarriff's nine-hole golf course has as its president actress Maureen O'Hara, who lives locally. Day trippers will enjoy exploring the pathways of the magnificent State Forest, filled with oaks and set in an ancient valley. Another must is a boat ride out to Garinish Island - also known as Ilnacullin - where world-famous Italian-styled gardens show off a sensational collection of plants from March to October every year.
