| 10 Places to Stay

The seaside village of Rathmullan is an increasingly popular holiday destination. Overlooked by hills, it enjoys a beautiful, peaceful location on the western shore of Lough Swilly, a lovely sandy beach three kilometers long, a pier and a small marina. Car ferries cross the lough regularly, taking passengers to Buncrana, the main town on the opposite and extremely scenic Inishowen Peninsula. Rathmullin is a wonderful spot for fishing, particularly shore angling, and charter boats are available for fishing and pleasure trips. But although sailing and fishing are among the village's favourite outdoor activities, with a regatta and a deep sea fishing festival held annually, there's plenty to do on dry land as well. Horse-riding, from the local equestrian centre, leads visitors along country lanes and beaches. Golfers, meanwhile, only have to drive a couple of miles north to reach Otway Golf Club, a links course on the banks of Lough Swilly. Hill-walking and hiking are most rewarding in the countryside around Rathmullan. The village itself has a remarkable history, being the scene of the Flight of the Earls in 1607 - described in the local Heritage Centre, housed in a 19th Century battery. It was also here that Irish revolutionary Wolfe Tone was captured after the 1798 Uprising.
