In west Northumberland, twenty miles west of Hexham on the A69, the Roman Newcastle-Carlisle road, lays a small village called Greenhead near Gilsland and Hadrian’s Wall. It has been an ecclesiastical parish since 1892 and its name is thought to refer to its location between Tipalt Burn and the river Irthing. During the medieval period several castles were built in surrounding villages of Thirlwell and Blenkinsopp as the area was subject to many border raids. The castle at Thirlwell is a ruin but that at Blenkinsopp was restored in 1880. Population increased due to coal mining during the nineteenth century and it is believed that the local coal mine was called Byron in honour of a local landowner Mrs Coulson, a daughter of Lord Byron. Well-known Newcastle architect John Dobson designed the church, which was erected in 1828 whilst Greenhead was a chapelry in the parish of Haltwhistle. When the railway replaced plans to build a canal between Newcastle and Carlisle, a station was built at Greenhead. The village is popular today with tourists for its close proximity to Hadrian’s Wall and the village of Gilsland, which straddles the Northumberland and Cumbrian borders, and as a base for exploring the border counties and historic sites.
