Ballymoe is a small, quiet village located beside the River Suck, which forms the border between counties Galway and Roscommon. Since the village lies on the western bank, it officially belongs to Galway, although it's a picturesque base for visitors wishing to explore both counties. Ballymoe is surrounded by farmland, with some areas of raised peat bog, and it lends itself ideally to countryside activities including angling and walking. Hikers may attempt some or all of the 60-mile Suck Valley Way, a marked route that follows the lovely green lowlands on either side of the river through the invitingly named "Nine Friendly Villages", including Ballymoe. Drivers will want to experience the dramatic contrasts of Galway, from the spectacular mountains and lakes of Connemara to the romantic beauty of Galway Bay and the fun-filled Galway City. County Roscommon, meanwhile, has an array of tranquil landscapes to admire in the Irish midlands. Here, sparkling loughs and rivers appear amid acres of fertile fields, forests and hills, in a region rich in culture and heritage. Visitors to Ballymoe may enjoy a short trip to the striking castle at Ballintubber or to Castlerea, a delightful market town set in wooded surroundings that incorporate a golf course.
