Wexford is located on the county's east coast, on the banks of the River Slaney, which flows into a natural harbour. Here, boat and tennis clubs overlook the water, and pleasure craft sail visitors round the harbour and along the river. The quayside is central to the town's nightlife, with an exciting range of restaurants, bars, clubs and a casino. By day, Wexford is a pleasure for shoppers, with major stores, gift and antiques shops, and a weekly farmer's market. Arts and crafts lovers will discover fascinating galleries and workshops, and there is an annual, internationally acclaimed opera festival. Still, Wexford has a historic air about its buildings, its narrow, medieval streets and old town walls, its small Bull Ring square and the ruins of the 12th Century Selskar Abbey. On the outskirts, the Irish National Heritage Park provides a 35-acre "recreation of Ireland's heritage". Only a little further afield, the wonderful gardens of Johnstown Castle are adjacent to the Irish Agricultural Museum and Famine Exhibition, and the fine Wexford Wildfowl Reserve is also easily reached. The town has a racecourse and golf course, and it's close to the popular beach towns of Rosslare and Curracloe, both with equestrian centres nearby.
