Weedon Bec is a large village and parish six miles south east of Daventry in Northamptonshire. It is commonly referred to as simply Weedon, although it includes Weedon, Lower Weedon and Upper Weedon, once three distinct villages but now merged into one. The Grand Union Canal passes through the village, as does the West Coast Main Line, although the village station closed down in the 1960's. Part of the village lies on the A5, known as Watling Street and once the main London to Holyhead Stage Coach route. Next to the canal is the former Napoleonic Wars Depot. This was built store arms in the event of an invasion by Napoleon. The depot was served directly by a branch from the canal via a portcullis gate. There was once a barracks in the village which housed a standing battalion, plus a troop of cavalry and one of horse artillery. In the event of an invasion, the Royal Family would have been transported to the Depot via the canal, to specially built Pavilions. Centrally located in the heart of England, this was considered a safe haven. Visitors to Weedon can enjoy a visit to its many pubs including The Heart of England and The Narrow Boat Inn.
