Heston is a familiar place for many international air travellers. Situated in the borough of Hounslow only three miles from Heathrow Airport, it's very convenient for passengers staying overnight before a morning flight or for those arriving late at night in London. Heston is located off the A4 - the Great West Road - and it connects easily with the motorway network. Once an isolated farming and market gardening village, Heston really started growing with the completion of the Great West Road in 1925. Today, it's a busy, built-up area with close links to Heathrow: Heston Centre, an industrial estate, is a base for many airport-related activities. The past, however, lives on in the form of St Leonard's parish church, which has been standing at the heart of the community for centuries. The church tower was built in the 1300s, while the lynch gate dates from 1450 and the porch survives from the Tudor era. There are green spaces too around these parts, the biggest being Heston Park, which includes tennis courts, football and multi-sports pitches, and play areas for children and toddlers. More facilities for sports fans can be found at the community sports hall and at Heston Pool.
