Latest reviews | Events in Chippenham
Chippenham owes its existence to a horseshoe-shaped meander in the River Avon which created an ideal defensive position being surrounded by water on three sides. The strategic importance of this arrangement wasn't lost on the Saxon King Alfred The Great who had his administrative seat there. One of the West of England's principle market towns, it has hosted the world famous Chippenham Folk Festival for many decades. Situated a few miles from the M4 the town is also on Brunel's Great Western Railway running between Bristol and London and retains some magnificent railway arches built by the great engineer. The history of the town is best observed at the Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre housed in a fine 18th Century grade II listed building. There's even a display highlighting an old custom of using mummified cats, frogs and bats to ward off evil spirits! The town's magnificent Town Hall is available for a range of public uses from weddings to business conferences. With its ornate plaster work and high ceilings it makes an excellent choice of venue for that special occasion. Alternatively there's the historic Neeld Hall overlooking Borough Parade which boasts an auditorium complete with a large stage a classical theatre façade.
