Benenden is a village and civil parish in the Tunbridge Wells District of Kent. The parish is located in the Weald, six miles to the west of Tenterden. Benenden is most famous for its girls’ boarding school, located to the north of the village. Three young teachers came in search of somewhere to open a new school in 1924 and came across Hemsted, the old manor house owned since the 1400s by the Guldeford family. Now Hemsted house is Benenden School, one of the top private girls’ schools in the country, numbering Princess Anne among its former pupils. The main part of the village is focussed around the green where cricket is played in the summer months and is bounded by St George's Church (a 19th century church on the site of a medieval building destroyed by fire), the village school, the gloriously fronted memorial hall, and the Bull public house. Benenden Hospital on Goddard’s Green Road was founded in 1907 as the centre for tuberculosis treatment for members of Trade Unions and large numbers of public sector employees who joined what is now the ‘Benenden Healthcare Society’. The hospital now provides a wide range of treatment services to private and NHS patients too.
