Verwood is situated some 15 miles north of Bournemouth on the River Crane. Set in heathland in the beautiful English county of Dorset, Verwood did not exist as a village until the mid nineteenth century. However, the area itself has been inhabited since medieval times. Early settlers were mainly potters, all loosely scattered around the heath. They constructed simple housing and work buildings and moved on when the clay was worked out in that spot. Since these early beginnings the area, which is close to the New Forest, has continued to grow in popularity. Brick making and pottery were responsible for the growth of the area and its separation from Cranborne. The coming of the railway in 1866 helped to bring the new industries into the village. The railway was finally closed in 1964. Pubs in the village include The Albion, the Fayrewood, The Monmouth Ash and The Three Swans. Other venues in Verwood include The Hub, a community facility housing a 300 seat theatre, a 100 seat hall. The Hub also has several other smaller rooms which are used for films, concerts plays and are available for hire by outside organisations. The Hub has a Bistro serving drinks and meals. This Bistro area is also used for art displays and exhibitions.
