Castle Donington is a small town on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border atop a hill above the Trent river. It features a blend of old and new with modern shops alongside stately Georgian houses and earlier timber framed dwellings. Donington Castle was begun in 1135, and demolished in 1595. Several private houses on the site now incorporate fragments of the castle. Some of the castle’s stone was used in the building of the first Donington Hall. The present Hall was built in 1793, becoming the home of the Hastings family until 1895. In Donington Park, the Grand Prix race track was developed between the wars and the glory of its early days is experienced in its museum, home to the largest collection of Grand Prix cars in the world. The Medieval Deer Park has been designated a Sight of Special Scientific Interest. The parish church of St. Edward King and Martyr can be traced to the early 1200’s. Dominating the skyline for miles around are its magnificent tower and spire. In a charming 17th Century farmhouse in the town centre called the Stone House, is the Castle Donington museum. The famous Donington rock music festival is held each year in Donington Park.
