The market town of Dronfield is on the edge of the Peak District National Park in the North East of Derbyshire. Dronfield lies on the River Drone, from which it takes its name, between Sheffield and Chesterfield. Dronfield is situated close to the Pennines and many of Derbyshire's finest beauty spots, making it well worth a visit. It is known to have existed since before the Doomsday Book, and to have suffered at the hands of William the Conqueror as he sought to bring order to the Northern parts of England. The Church of St John the Baptist had been built by 1135 although its churchyard is thought to contain an early Anglican preaching cross that predates the main church. The Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary was established in 1349 in the hall of the chantry priests. Following the dissolution of the monasteries and suppression of the chantries in 1547, it became a local inn called the Green Dragon Inn. Dronfield grew around various industries, mostly coal mining with pits at Stubley being mentioned in the 16th century. The town also benefited from trade with the lead mining and grindstone industries in the Peak District. The wealthy Rotheram family, who became the Lords of the manor of Dronfield, were successful lead merchants
