The village of Tissington is to be found in the county of Derbyshire lying between Buxton and Ashbourne. This picturesque and quaint village is in fact an estate village built around Tissington Hall, built by Francis FitzHerbert, one of the ancestors of the present owners and today. The village though can trace its history back even further than to before 1086 when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. As you approach Tissington along the A515 you immediately notice an avenue of lime trees giving the appearance of an approach to a country manor but instead you soon find yourself in this scenic village. The parish church of St Marys’ dating back to Norman Times and houses many of the local landowners family, the Fitzherbert’s. The Fitzherbert family still occupy the hall, which is open to the public, and their estate stretches from Bradbourne Mill in the east to the River Dove in the west. To a greater extent it is the Fitzherbert family that have helped shaped the village, and this is a village that proudly retains its links with the past, the Old Slaughterhouse on Chapel Lane used to supply surrounding butchers with its produce and today it is a butchers in its own right, there are the Old Coach House Tea Rooms to be found opposite the church, there is plenty to see and do in this little village and you should make certain that if you are in the area that you visit here.
