Mentioned within the Domesday Book of 1086 the hamlet of Nuneaton can trace its history back that far when a Benedictine nunnery was founded here in the 12th century, traces of the nunnery remaining visible today. It was the 13th century that was to see Nuneaton grow as it is located within the high producing coalfields of Warwickshire. In keeping with many English towns though it was the Industrial Revolution that saw Nuneaton grow at a phenomenal rate, it was during this period to become a thriving location for the growing textile industry. This is clearly evident from the Census figures – in 1801 the population was recorded as being around 5,000 and by 1901 the population had grown to 25,000. During the second World War Nuneaton was home to a large munitions factory and it was during this period that the town suffered from heavy bombing attacks. Nuneaton managed to rebuild itself, much of the original industry has now gone but the town is ideally placed for the commuter who needs access to nearby Coventry and Birmingham and today the town centre is a thriving location for retailers attracting shoppers who prefer the intimacy that Nuneaton offers in comparison to those larger cities.
