Lying alongside the River Anker and the Coventry Canal the village of Polesworth in Warwickshire is surrounded by history. Polesworth Abey was founded in the 9th century and today the remains of the cloister and the Abbey gateway remain. Later coal was discovered in the area and by the 17th century there was a well established coal mining industry here, with this industrial activity other industries were attracted and soon Polesworth was producing bricks and pottery, all adding to its economy because the Coventry Canal then allowed trade to be more widely undertaken. By the 1900’s the many coal mines that had sprung up had all but disappeared and there were three main collieries in the area, Pooley Hall, Birchmoor and Hall End and these collieries remained in production until their closure in the 1980’s. The Abbey Church in Polesworth sits in the middle of the village on the north bank of the River Anker, those who are taking advantage of a canal cruise on the Coventry Canal are able to see the tower from either direction and for this reason it attracts many visitors each year.
