Shildon is an interesting town in County Durham in North East England home to over ten thousand people. It played an important role in the birth of the Railway, a legacy which is shared at the local Museum dedicated to Timothy Hackworth who helped pioneer the first ever passenger railway, and incorporates Locomotion National Railway Museum. This fabulous Museum spreads over 15 acres, or if that’s not enough be prepared to be impressed at the Head Of Steam, which has enthralling displays and locomotives on offer. If history of a different kind is top of your wish list Escombe Church is where the hands of time reverse 1400 years in an instant. Or perhaps the link with a thousand Roman soldiers will tempt a visit to Binchester Fort, time it right and see the re-enactment where Roman life is proudly shared. For lovers of Mother Nature’s wonders there is Low Barns Nature Reserve where three lakes, streams and ponds are home to iridescent dragon flies, ducks, and kingfisher’s, or how about the wild flowers and butterflies unveiled at Thrislington Plantation and Nature Reserve. Or maybe the thought of choosing a winner will be a clear favourite at Sedgefield Race Course where racing has excited punters since 1732.
