Kirknewton is a small village in West Lothian in Scotland situated to the west of the Pentland Hills 10 miles south-west of Edinburgh and three miles from Livingston. The village developed during the 19th century with oil-shale mining and quarrying although there is evidence of a settlement dating back to the Iron Age with forts on Kaimes Hill and Dalmahoy Hill. Surrounded by open farmland and rolling hills Kirknewton has the look of a rural village, it is a popular tourist destination and an ideal base for exploring Edinburgh and the Lothians. There are holiday accommodation including a camping and caravanning park, shops and stores, a village pub and chip shop. Historically interesting features include Kirknewton House dating from 1600 and an old Kirk yard with headstones dating back to the 1700’s and a burial enclosure dating back to 1662. During WW2 the RAF built a military base in Kirknewton, today the airfield is home to a gliding school. The village is close to Edinburgh Airport, attractions nearby include the Royal Highland Showground, the Union Canal which runs from Edinburgh to Falkirk with canal boat trips leaving from Linlithgow, the Almondell Country Park with river and woodland walks, abundant with wildlife, picnic and BBQ sites, and there are two major shopping centres in Livingston; The Almondvale Centre and The Livingston Designer Outlet.
