Tomintoul is a village situated in the Highlands, located centrally in the Cairngorms National Park, in north-east Scotland. Tomintoul is one of the highest villages in the Highlands, at 1160ft, with picturesque scenery and the nearby Ailnack Gorge, Scotland’s largest glacial melt-water gorge. Tomintoul is located on the Crown Estate of Glenlivet and was founded by the 4th Duke of Gordon c1750. There is a small museum in the square with interesting information on the history of the village and surrounding area. The village has a selection of restaurants, cafés, shops and amenities; the main industry here is tourism due to its position on the ‘Whiskey Trail’. The village offers a variety of holiday accommodation including hotels, B&B’s and self catering cottages; The Glenlivet Distillery is seven miles north and open for visitor tours. Tomintoul is an ideal centre for exploring the tranquil remote Highlands either by walking, mountain-biking or horse-riding with way-marked trails giving easy access to the countryside and wildlife; there are downhill skiing facilities at Glenmulliach Forest and cross-country skiing in the Cromdale Hills. The River Avon is ideal for Salmon and Trout fishing and the area is abundant with golf courses. There is also an adventure playground for children.
