Kirkcaldy is a Fife town, on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. The town received its Royal Burgh charter in 1644. Kirkcaldy is known as ‘The Lang Toun’ as it stretches along four miles, with a winding High Street running parallel with the shore. Kirkcaldy was famous as an industrial town for its textile and linoleum manufacturing. On the Kirk Wynd sits the 15th century tower of Kirkcaldy’s ancient parish church. Nearby St Brycedale Church is an impressive building with a tall steeple. Along the High Street are reminders of the Scottish vernacular architecture, principally the Sailors Walk, these 16th century houses that overlook the medieval harbour were restored by the National Trust for Scotland in 1952. The town is the birthplace of Adam Smith the economist, the theatre and college have been named after him. Adjacent to the railway station are The Public Library, Museum, Art Gallery and War Memorial. Kirkcaldy’s shopping centre has many of the main chain stores, found either on the High Street or in The Mercat or Postings Centres. There is also a public swimming pool. Beveridge Park was bequeathed in 1890, complete with boating pond, tennis courts, putting green, bowling green and skate ramps. Kirkcaldy is home to Raith Rovers Football Club, their home ground is Stark’s Park.
