Leven is situated at the west end of Largo Bay on the northern coastline of the Firth of Forth. Leven became a burgh of barony in 1609 and is the fourth largest urban area in Fife. At the mouth of the River Leven, the town was historically known as a seaport, the main industry now is tourism; Leven is a popular holiday resort with its beautiful beach, caravan sites, parklands and golf courses. Leven has many buildings of architectural interest. Fragments remain of Leven’s oldest building, the 12th century Old Scoonie Parish Church. Leven Parish Church close to the town centre retains the octagonal steeple of 1775. St Margaret’s Episcopal Church, in Victoria Road c.1879-80, features hammerdressed masonry and conical-roofed steeple. In the grounds of Carberry House is the sundial believed to incorporate the shaft of Mercat Cross, c.1623. Letham Glen on the northern outskirts of town has woodland walks along the Scoonie Burn. Silver Burn Park is a public park with mature gardens, a little farm and pond. Leven has a wide range of shops and a shopping centre. The Swimming Pool is on the harbour at the Shorehead. Leven’s two 18-hole golf courses are Leven Links located on the sands of Largo Bay and further inland the municipal Scoonie Golf Course.
