Long Melford has a lot to offer the visitor; historic buildings, good food, life-style shopping, antiques and the latest fashions.

Set in the heart of the valley of the Stour river, the scenery is something special. Two hundred years ago John Constable thought so too, using scenes from the river in many of his paintings.

There are two stately homes; Kentwell, a romantic, moated Tudor mansion in a tranquill parkland setting, and Melford Hall, ancestral home of the Hyde Parker family, which now belongs to the National Trust.

Five hotels offer a wide range of accommodation, from luxury four-poster beds to sensibly-priced motel rooms. There are lots of options for good eating too, with five other specialist restaurants offering a range from nouvelle cuisine through traditional English dishes to tea and snacks.

The shops are something special, catering not only for the local population, but also forming an oasis of quality shops for the district and beyond. They include two bookshops, two butchers, fashion shops, department store, picture framer, pottery and undertaker, plus a fine array of antique shops. Mostly managed by their owners, they have an individual style which makes them well worth a visit. Population 5,000
