Lochranza is a small picturesque village at the north-west corner of the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde, North Ayrshire in Scotland and is situated 13 miles north-west of Brodick.
The village was built on both sides of Loch Ranza and named after it. Lochranza is surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery, the ruins of the impressive 13th century Lochranza Castle and an abundance of wildlife including red-deer, golden eagles, seals, otters, peregrine falcons and much more.
During the 19th century Lochranza was a major herring port, it is now a popular tourist destination ideal for anglers, walkers and nature-watchers. There is a regular ferry service to the mainland and in 2003 Lochranza Pier was re-opened and is part of the route of the Clyde Paddle Steamer ‘Waverly’. Lochranza has hotels, guest-houses, youth-hostel, a camping and Caravan Park, a village hall, shops, an 18-hole golf course and the Isle of Arran Distillery which was built in 1995 with café/restaurant and shop, the visitor centre, opened by the Queen in 1997, offers tours and samples of their Arran single malt whiskey.
The village is uniquely situated in a north –facing valley on the Highland Boundary fault-line, it has interesting geology and is home to a Field Study Centre designed for students studying, geography, geology and environmental science
