Kintyre is a long narrow peninsula approximately 11 miles across and 40 miles long in Argyll and Bute on the west coast of Scotland with the Mull of Kintyre along the Atlantic coast-line at the southern end and East Loch Tarbet in the north. Kintyre was made famous by the song ‘Mull of Kintyre’ by Paul McCartney, who enjoyed holidays in the area with his family. Kintyre is an ancient site with beautiful scenery, hidden coves and unspoilt beaches. There are many historically interesting features including prehistoric standing-stones, cairns, Iron Age Forts, historic castles and medieval churches. Kintyre is a popular tourist destination; attractions include Sea-tours to explore the wildlife, coastal sites and spectacular cliffs around the Mull. Other boat-trips are available to tour Arran, the Ayrshire coast and Northern Ireland. The Kintyre Way is a long distance walk stretching 103 miles, starting at Tarbet harbour finishing at Dunaverty Bay. The walk can take between four to seven days to complete and there is a range of holiday accommodation to choose from and plenty of places to eat. There are cycle-paths, horse-riding, golfing, sailing and fishing facilities available. Campbeltown is the main town in Kintyre, well-known for its loch and for producing its single malt whiskey. An annual music festival is also held here in August.
