Lying at the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains and around 15 miles inland from the coast at Aberaeron and South of Aberystwyth is the village of Tregaron which since the Middle Ages has played an important role in the economics of the area, livestock and wool fairs have been held here sine the late 13th century. By the 19th century the town had become an important resting place for drovers who would arrive here with their sheep and cattle to walk to markets as far away as London. This reliance on livestock encouraged those with sheep to become involved with woollen industry and in the 19th century many of the local townsfolk were involved with knitting, particularly socks for the miners of South Wales and at one time there were around 170 hosiers working in the area. Tregaron is home to two very different and influential people, the first of whom is Henry Richard who was an MP and later went on to become the first Secretary of the League of Nations and today there is a statue in honour of his achievements in the town. The other famous person is one Twm Sion Cati – a Welsh Robin Hood whose hideout was amongst the cave in the hills above the town. A rich and varied past today provides Tregaron with a heritage of which it is justly proud. For those who enjoy the outdoor life Tregaron has plenty to offer, cycling, hiking and fishing are just some of the more relaxing ways to spend your time on a visit here.
