Llangefni lies close to the centre of the Island of Anglesey and has always been a busy market town, back in the mid 17th century Llangefni was an important location as it was a staging post for the port of Holyhead – the first postmaster at Llangefni being appointed in 1636. Because of its rural location it is easy to see why it developed as a market town and records show that cottage industries were established , carpenters, blacksmiths wheelwrights and even a brass foundry all conducted their business in and around Llangefni. Livestock and its market, to a certain extent, dictated the road layout in Llangefni, the road was made wider to ensure the free movement of cattle through the town. As the town grew its wealth was reflected in the new buildings that were erected, a church in 1825, the Town Hall in 1841 and it is said that a police station existed on Field Street in 1860. By 1863 the railways had arrived and this added to the towns importance and today the Bull Hotel in the town centre is a reminder of its past. The town still retains many of the original buildings, the market is still held twice a week in the town square and close by, the town clock (built in 1902) is the centrepiece of the town.
