Lying in one of the most picturesque valleys of Staffordshire is the village of Eccleshall, mentioned in the Domesday Book as having around 100 inhabitants resident in the area. The catle which is not really a castle was built in the 13th century and today is a Scheduled Ancient Monument with a Grade II* Listing meaning that denotes it as a particularly important building of more than special interest. However when you visit the only remains to be seen is the nine sided tower – the remainder being destroyed during the Civil War. During the 18th century Eccleshall was described as “one of the most fertile and largest” of the parochial districts in Staffordshire and because of its unique location it was, at this time, a favoured stop over point for those travelling between London and Chester. By the 19th century though its central location on the turnpike roads was to suffer with the arrival of steam trains and canals – neither network finding Eccleshall a suitable location and as a consequence life in the area returned to a more peaceful pace. Today its location has once again found favour with those residents who appreciate the surrounding countryside and yet have to commute to work with the major conurbations of Manchester and Birmingham being equally convenient.
