West Camel is a small picturesque village with a population of about 400. Situated in the south of Somerset about seven miles north of Yeovil, it offers easy access to the A303 which runs just north of the village. The village does not get its name from the animal but actually from the village's Saxon name of Cantmeel meaning bare ridge. Settlements in the area go back at least to the 10th century with the earliest written references being a grant from Aethelred II of the village to the monks of Muchelney Abbey. Remains of a Saxon Preaching Cross dating from 940AD have been found. The area is one of the many places thought to be a possible site of King Arthur's final battle. On the site of the Preaching Cross find was once a timber church, replaced by a stone building around the tenth century and added to by the Normans one hundred years later. This was eventually enlarged and to make the current All Saints Church. There are many walks to be had in the area. The Leland trail passes right through West Camel, together with a network of other footpaths. In 2001 the community built a new village hall, Davis Hall, and this is now used for a wide variety of clubs and shows.
