On the northern bank of the river Tyne, opposite the Gateshead are of Blaydon in north east England, lies Newburn, a semi rural village dating from which Roman remains have been discovered close to Hardrians Wall. The site of a dispute between two claimants to the Earl of Northumberland in 1072, the local parish church was destroyed in a fire. In 1640 the Battle of Newburn Ford took place when the Scots, under the command of the Earl of Leven, defeated the English whom they outnumbered 7 to 1, at what was the lowest fordable point on the Tyne at that time. They marched on and occupied Newcastle upon Tyne, the area of Scotswood marking their position. The ford was used by Oliver Cromwell and has since been known as Cromwell’s Ford. George Stephenson, the famous engineer was married in Newburn parish church but it was steam pioneer William Hedley, who was born in Newburn that built the first locomotive, the Puffing Billy, in 1812 – two years before his rivals. After the Industrial Revolution, the town became heavily industrialised with steel making, coal mining and chemical manufacturing all thriving industries. The town, along with many others in the locality, became part of Newcastle upon Tyne and the metropolitan borough of Tyne & Wear in 1972
