Born c 1214. Died 1292 - English philospher and scientist.
After studying at Oxford and in Paris, he gained a reputation for unconventional learning in philosophy, magic and alchemy, becoming known as ‘Doctor Mirabilis’ (wonderful teacher). Publications include Opus Majus (Greater Work) in 1266-67, and he was a remarkable speculator on many subjects including lighter-than-air flying machines, and circumnavigation of the globe.
