Born 1872. Died 1941 - Scottish electrical engineer and pioneering contractor.


He founded his own construction company Balfour Beatty Ltd. in 1909 with accountant Andrew Beatty. They built and operated tramway systems for Dumfermline, Llanelly and many towns in the Midlands. They designed the first major hydro-electrical schemes in Scotland, and also pioneered the National Grid in the 1930s.
