Earliest recorded design was Shawfield Mansion, Glasgow (1712, demolished 1795). Influenced British neo-Palladianism. Best known buildings include Rolls House (1717), Burlington House (1718-19), Houghton Hall, Norfolk, Mereworth Castle, Kent and Compton Place, Eastbourne.
