Born 1906 - Berlin. Died 1979 - Biochemist and Nobel Prize winner.


Studied physiology and chemistry at Berlin, taught biochemistry in Cambridge. Identified enzyme in snake venom which causes paralysis. Discovered penicillin was a small molecule not an enzyme. Shared 1945 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine with Alexander Fleming. Elected FRS in 1949 and knighted in 1969.
