Born 1888. Died 1970 - English physicist and geophysicist.


Educated at Manchester and Cambridge. Pacifist during WWI. Solved problems of thermal conductivity and diffusion of gases. In 1917 identified thermal diffusion. Produced theory of magnetic storms, later known as Chapman-Ferraro theory. Took research posts in Alaska and Colorado. Elected FRS in 1919.
