Served in WWI. Conducted New York Philharmonic Orchestra before returning to England as conductor of Halle Orchestra in Manchester. Married oboist Evelyn Rothwell. Awarded Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1950. Given Freedom of Manchester in 1958.
