Studied at Manchester and Cambridge. First book Stellar Movements and the Structure of the Universe (1914). Wrote series of scientific books for the layman. Eddington Medal instituted for outstanding work on theoretical astronomy. Knighted in 1930, received Order of Merit in 1938.
