Brief career as a jockey before becoming a comedian. Acted in music hall portraying a shy, young man singing slightly bawdy songs accompanied on his ukelele. Became a popular film star, his films including Boots Boots (1934) and George in Civvy Street (1946). Returned to the stage postwar, subject to ill-health in his latter years.
