(full name and title: Sir Stirling Craufurd Moss, OBE)
Born: September 17, 1929-

'Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?' was once the standard question asked by British Policeman of speeding motorists. It was even once asked of Stirling Moss himself, who apparently had some difficulty in convincing the officer that he was telling the truth! There was even a television advert at one time based on this incident.

So who was the real Stirling Moss? Quite simply, he was the best all round motor racer in the history of the sport. Despite never winning the world title, he was named the best Formula 1 driver of all time in 2006 in a book by journalist Alan Henry.

Stirling Moss was born in London in 1929 and raced in an era when it was common to compete in multiple classes of race, often on the same day. Moss was certainly no exception, racing in many different types of race, including Formulas one to three, touring car races and rallies.

Such were Moss's abilities as a driver, he was able to perform at very high levels in various different forms of motor racing. He began racing in 1948 and won 194 of 497 races in which he competed, including 16 Formula 1 Grand Prix wins.

Unfortunately, an accident in 1962 left Moss in a coma for a long time and he was practically paralysed for six months. This was to be the end of his Grand Prix career, although he did continue to be seen racing in classic car events after his official retirement.

Moss was awarded the OBE in 1959 and knighted in the year 2000. He currently works as a narrator for a children's cartoon, Roary the Racing Car and as a spokesman for Bayer, the manufacturers of Levitra.
