Was a watch-maker before he took charge of a private observatory at Dunecht, Aberdeenshire. Held the position of HM Astronomer at the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hoe (1879-1907). Twice awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. Knighted in 1900.
