Studied at Oxford University. Produced a number of Shakespeare plays at the Old Vic in the 1930s. Was administrator of Sadler’s Wells (1939-45) and director of the Old Vic (1950-51). Founded the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis in 1963. Knighted in 1961.
