Born 1788. Died 1856 - Scottish philosopher and scholar.

Educated at Balliol College, Oxford. He wrote on many subjects including philosophy, educational reform, psychology, religion and logic. Important figure in the revival of philosophy in Great Britain. His main work was published posthumously as Lectures on Metaphysics and Logic (1859-60).
