Inherited his family transport business. Formed a partnership with Gordon White founded a greetings card business. Built up a large number of diverse business under the umbrella of the Hanson Trust. Became chairman of Trident Television in 1974. Was a director of Lloyds Bank and member of the Royal College of Surgeons. Created a life peer in 1983.
