Studied law at Oxford, called to the Bar but never practised. Successful as a satirical and humorous writer. His series of Misleading Cases in the Common Law was first published in Punch magazine. Wrote eight novels, including The Water Gypsies and Holy Deadlock; and fifteen plays, including the light opera Tantivy Towers. Was MP for Oxford University from 1935 to 1950, did much to improve divorce law. Knighted in 1945.
