Born 1939 - English novelist.

Worked as a physical education teacher before turning to writing. Best known for A Kestrel for a Knave (Kes) published in 1974. Other novels include The Blinder (1966), The Price of Coal (1979) and The Heart of It (1994). Has written a number of television scripts including Born Kicking (1992) and has collaborated with the filmmaker Ken Loach on a number of occasions.
