Paralyzed in his right leg when he was seven. Studied at Oxford University. Was drama critic of the Sunday Times (1947-76) and of Christian Science Monitor (1931-74). An authority on French theatre often discovering plays in France and recommending their production in Great Britain. Wrote a number of books and French and British theatre as well as an autobiography.
