Henry Ireton
Born in Attenborough, NottinghamshireBorn in 1611
Died on 26th of November 1651
Ireton studied at Trinity College, Oxford, and was called to the bar at Middle Temple. He joined the Parliamentary Army on the outbreak of the Civil War, and his service in its early battles caught Cromwell’s eye, and won Ireton promotion. He married Cromwell’s daughter Bridget. After initially hoping to see a constitutional monarchy established he lost faith that Charles could ever be trusted, and was one of the signatories of his death warrant. In 1650 Ireton became lord-deputy of Ireland, where he died of the plague the following year.
