Worked as journalist on Financial Times (1934-40). For next six years served with Royal Artillery during which time he began writing his adventure novels. The first, Wreckers Must Breathe (1940) was followed by over 30 books. Several have been made into films including The Lonely Skier (1947) and Target Antarctica (1993).
