Performed in BBC radio plays as a child. Engineering draughtsman with Rolls Royce. Films included Whisky Galore (1949), The Great Escape (1963) and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1968). Played in many stage productions but achieved popularity in television as butler, Mr Hudson, in Upstairs, Downstairs and as C15 boss in the Professionals.
